Excessive Thickness change issue can (I feel) interchangably be used with too much distortion issue. So I would propose switching towards the equivalent good elements, or just increase the thickness of the shell features so that they become increasingly rigid and therefore a lot less vulnerable to too much thickness https://a-solution.info/
